What is Model-Based Engineering? How can it help my organization?
Model-Based Engineering (MBE), a.k.a., Model-Driven Development (MDD), is an umbrella term that describes an approach to Software and Systems Engineering that:
  • emphasizes a system architecture model as the primary work artifact throughout the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
  • combines traditional Software and Systems Engineering best practices with rigorous visual modeling techniques
  • typically uses an open standard visual modeling language (e.g., UML 2, SysML, ArchiMate) as both an as an Architecture Description Language and a lingua franca to communicate among various stakeholders (e.g., Client, Business Analysts, Systems Engineers, Software Engineers, Project Managers, etc.) who need to understand MBE work products, such as conceptual architectures, requirements specifications, system analyses, system designs, network (deployment) architectures, and system architectures.

What is the best way to transition to a Model-Based Engineering approach?
Model-Based Engineering represents a seismic cultural and technology change in how software developers, systems engineers, and business analysts specify enterprise architectures and business processes
  • no silver bullets, requires diligent application of proven model-driven development best practices
  • more think time up front; less test time on the back end
  • more graphic architecture blueprints; less MS Office paper chase
  • less iterative, incremental “when are we done?” process; more opportunistic and predictable pipelined V-model process
Organizations need to invest in a comprehensive Model-Based Engineering language-tool-process-framework strategy. This involves a significant investment in quality Model-Based Engineering training, tools, and coaching to enable their teams to make the transition in an expeditious manner. Otherwise, they will predictably lapse back into old document-centric habits when pressed by time/budget constraints.

How can PivotPoint customize our training for our team and project needs?
All of PivotPoint’s training is based on flexible learning modules that can be flexibly mixed-and-matched to meet your team’s project needs. For example, an Agile software development team working with Business Analysts and Solution Architects might want to consider augmenting an Essential Agile Modeling Applied: UML 2 + edition workshop with a BPM + BPMN 2 - Basic learning module to allow the team to improve communication using BPMN instead of UML 2 Activity diagrams during Business Analysis. Or a Systems Engineering team collaborating with Software Engineers might want to combine SysML (a UML 2 dialect) language training with UML 2 language training to improve communication when tracing the former’s Functional Analysis view to the latter’s Software Design view.

In addition, our training can also be customized for industry and corporate standards for enterprise architecture frameworks (e.g., DoDAF. UPDM, TOGAF), process frameworks (e.g., Agile Modeling, Unified Process, Scaled Agile Framework [SAFe]), cybersecurity frameworks (e.g., DoD Risk Management Framework [DoD RMF]), safety standards (e.g., FAA, NHTSA, ISO 26262), as well as ad hoc corporate standards (subject to confidentiality).
How can we obtain the best training value for our training budget?
When you consider the quality, customizability, and effectiveness of PivotPoint’s Model-Based Engineering training you will find that it is an outstanding value for your training budget. In addition, we offer volume discounts for multiple workshops ordered at the same time, and special discounts for Small Groups (6 or fewer), Non-Profits, Educational Institutions, Research Organizations, and U.S. Federal Government organizations (Federal Departments, Agencies, Military, FFRDCs, etc.) and DoD Contractors. Consulting & Coaching Questions

Why should our project team engage PivotPoint's Model-Based Engineering (MBE) coaching & consulting services?
Although PivotPoint’s training is highly effective in getting your Model-Based Engineering team off to a good and fast start, you will predictably encounter problems along the way as your team scales their system architectures. These predictable scalability problems include, but are not limited to, team modeling, model management, automated Verification & Validation, automated document generation, model simulation, automated code generation, and

PivotPoint’s MBE coaching & consulting services are a good way to hedge your investment in Model-Based Engineering technology. Our savvy MBE coaches and consultants are experienced in applying the principles and best practices that you learn during MBE training to demanding real world projects.
